Training and development

A range of short courses, seminars, symposia, workshops and ongoing professional development programs are provided for education, digital design, sound, music production film and video production, journalism, creative writing, advertising, public relations and information management professionals and aspiring professionals. UTS training and development is provided in the following areas:

  • Journalism and media

    The long-established Australian Centre for Independent Journalism at UTS offers intensive hands-on short courses in journalism and the media including writing for the Web, specialist fields of journalism and editing. Courses are provided for professionals working in the media to upgrade their skills and for those looking to develop new skills.

  • AVID Pro Tools™ audio technology

    UTS: Pro School (opens an external site) offers professionals and aspiring professionals the opportunity to gain expertise and certification in using AVID Pro Tools™ audio technology. Pro School is one of the few Australian training programs that can take participants from learning the fundamentals of Pro Tools™ up to a 300-level professional.

  • Apple Final Cut Pro™, Motion™ and Apple Logic Studio™

    UTS: Apple Authorised Training Centre (opens an external site) offers professionals and aspiring professionals the opportunity to gain expertise and certification in using Final Cut Pro™ and Motion™ for video editing and post-production and Logic Studio™ for sound and music production – the industry leading tools for media and music creation, production and post production.

  • Education

    A range of professional development activities is available at UTS for teachers and education leaders. A number of these are accredited by the NSW Institute of Teachers. Innovative new professional development programs are also being developed for school principals, deputy principals and other senior schools leaders and managers in areas such as financial and business management, project management, leadership, and marketing and promotion.

    UTS has a close working partnership with the NSW Secondary Principals Council and the Australian Council for Educational Leaders and consults with these and other education bodies to tailor training and development to meet the needs of teachers and school leaders in a changing education environment.

  • Information management, storage and retrieval, data analytics and data visualisation

    The Centre for Information and Knowledge Management at UTS offers an Executive Certificate in Knowledge Management and other short courses in data and information management including data storage and retrieval, data analytics and data visualisation.

  • Advertising, public relations and social media

    The Australian Centre for Public Communication offers an Executive Certificate in Public Relations for professionals with other qualifications who need to gain an overview of contemporary public relations practices. The Centre also runs seminars and workshops in advertising, public relations and social media for professionals to upgrade their skills in new media and new techniques.

An Executive Certificate in Public Relations (with a link to the details for enrolment) is being offered in 2012 for professionals with other qualifications who need to gain an overview of contemporary public relations practices.

  • Fiction, non-fiction writing and e-publishing

    Over more than 30 years many of Australia's new, developing and established writers have studied writing at UTS. The Centre for New Writing is home to some of Australia's leading fiction and non-fiction writers, including Delia Falconer (Sydney), Debra Adelaide (The Household Guide to Dying), John Dale (Huckstepp), Gabrielle Carey, (Puberty Blues), Tony Macris (When Horse Became Saw) and Tony Maniaty (The Balibo Five). The Centre for New Writing offers innovative writing courses in a range of genres which allow students to develop and expand their creative skills under the guidance of highly experienced writing lecturers.

  • Public history for teachers and public historians

    The Centre for Public History at UTS provides short courses for teachers and public historians to upgrade and expand their skills under the guidance of some of Australia's leading public historians.
